Self-monitoring of blood glucose in noninsulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes: a never ending story?

چکیده
Recommendations for self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in the global guidelines for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) summarize our current knowledge and evidence from studies.1 In standard care, the global IDF guidelines recommend SMBG for all newly diagnosed people with type 2 diabetes. In both standard and comprehensive care, the use of SMBG is advised for people with type 2 diabetes on insulin and oral agents.1 Use of SMBG should be considered in the standard care of people with diabetes using oral agents to provide information on hyoglycemia and glucose variability. The guidelines emphasize that SMBG is an integral part of self-management.

Intensive Structured Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose and Glycemic Control in Noninsulin-Treated Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the added value of intensive self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), structured in timing and frequency, in noninsulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The 12-month, randomized, clinical trial enrolled 1,024 patients with noninsulin-treated type 2 diabetes (median baseline HbA1c, 7.3% [IQR, 6.9-7.8%]) at 39 diabetes clinics in ...
متن کاملSelf-monitoring of blood glucose in noninsulin-treated type 2 diabetes: an overview
INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in noninsulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) remains unclear. We aimed to review the trials investigating the effects of SMBG in this population. METHODS Medline was searched until June 29, 2009. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of at least 12 weeks' duration were included. Data on the following aspects...
متن کامل[Prevalence and associated factors in self-monitoring of blood glucose in noninsulin-treated type 2 diabetes patients in the Valencia Community, Spain].
BACKGROUND Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in noninsulin-treated type 2 diabetes patients (T2DM) is a controversial topic. We aimed to describe the SMBG prevalence in noninsulin-treated (NIT) T2DM patients in the Valencia Community (VC) and to analyze factors associated with their use. METHOD Cross-sectional study with 573 NIT-T2DM patients from 83 primary care surgeries. Electronic m...
متن کاملThe Burden of Structured Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose on Diabetes-Specific Quality of Life and Locus of Control in Patients with Noninsulin-Treated Type 2 Diabetes: The PRISMA Study
BACKGROUND To evaluate whether structured self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is associated with changes in diabetes-specific quality of life (DSQoL) and locus of control (LOC) in patients with noninsulin-treated type 2 diabetes (T2DM). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS In this analysis of the PRISMA (Prospective Randomized Trial on Intensive SMBG Management Added Value in Noninsulin-Treated T2DM ...
